It is hard to believe that we are already in the second month! Four weeks have passed since the joining of the sperm with the egg. In the first month, we saw that our baby’s central nervous system, heart and lungs were starting to develop and his or her little face was beginning to form.
It is really important that you are eating foods rich in B vitamins, and getting enough protein. Taking a prenatal vitamin will help with this.
Now in the second month there are little folds of skin forming on either side of the head. These folds will become tiny ears. The head, is large in proportion to the rest of the body but the brain and spinal cord are already well formed.
There are small protrusions or “buds” that are growing into little arms and legs. It is shocking how fast our babies grow even at such a very tiny size…of about an inch!
At the end of eight weeks, the baby weighs about 1/30th of an ounce. His or her arms and legs are beginning to show distinct divisions. The arms have elbows, forearms, hands, and the most stunning of all, each little finger has it’s own unique fingerprint!
The legs are divided into thighs, knees, calves or lower legs, and feet with each individual toe. The umbilical cord is formed and the long bones and internal organs are growing. The tail-like process at the end of the spinal cord now disappears. All of this rapid growth is taking place only 8 weeks into the pregnancy!
